Historical Culpeper Death Records

Culpeper County death registers from 1853 to 1896 survive on microfilm at the Library of Virginia. Virginia law starting in 1853 required each county's Commissioner of Revenue to record deaths annually. The Clerk of Court kept the registers and prepared alphabetical indexes. These registers recorded name, race, sex, cause of death, age, place of birth, occupation, marital status, parents' names, and who supplied the information. That law was repealed in 1896, and no official deaths were recorded in Culpeper County between 1897 and 1911.

Culpeper County has records dating to 1748, but Civil War activity in the area damaged or destroyed some courthouse materials. Researchers working with 19th-century deaths in Culpeper should check both the county's surviving registers and supplemental sources like church records and cemetery records. The Virginia Genealogical Society indexed the 1853-1896 death registers, making name lookups faster. That index is available through the Library of Virginia.

From June 1912 forward, death certificates for Culpeper County are on microfilm at the Library of Virginia through 1939. A death index covering 1912-1954 helps researchers find a certificate number before ordering the full record.
