Cumberland County death registers from 1853 to 1896 are on microfilm at the Library of Virginia. Virginia law from 1853 required each county to record deaths annually. The Commissioner of Revenue gathered the data, and the Clerk of Court kept the registers with alphabetical indexes. Registers captured name, race, sex, date and place of death, cause of death, age, birthplace, occupation, marital status, parents' names, and informant identity. The law ended in 1896. No official deaths were recorded in Cumberland County between 1897 and 1911.
